The keys to understanding the growth of League of Legends in Latin America

League of Legends (LoL) is the electronic sport that most audience captures worldwide. During 2019, according to Esports Charts , it was seen for more than 72 million hours , and Latin America is one of the most important regions to continue the growth of this game, which is based on a premise as simple as it is attractive : work in team to fight your way through the three lanes and destroy the enemy base .

About the development of electronic sports around this video game, as well as his perception of the Latin American panorama regarding esports, Raúl Fernández , general manager for Latin America of Riot Games spoke in an interview withInfobae Mexico within the framework of his participation in the Sports Summit Mexico 2020.

In this event, world sports leaders meet to discuss issues such as their impact on audiences and their growth . Regarding the presence of LoL, Fernández comments that it is a validation for esports , because it is “being part of an exclusive club for traditional sports , which we have always seen from the outside .”

It should be remembered that at the beginning of February the first stadium in Latin America exclusively for esports was inaugurated , which will be the headquarters of the official League of Legends tournament for the region and in which more than USD 2.5 million were invested. This project was led by Riot Games, TV Azteca and Cinemex, through their company Arena.

The aspiration is to achieve the example of the Asian nations in the long term and although Fernández does not venture to say a specific period in which it is expected to achieve that goal, he is aware that the dynamics of the market will be the ones that dictate the actions that must be taken. out to continue growth and perhaps within five years they could begin to explore a “multi-city” ecosystem in Latin America .

Countries like Mexico still do not have multiple references in the esports universe. It is a reality that games like League of Legends itself have been one of the most relevant for national figures like Seiya; however, they have encountered obstacles to standing out. One of them is having arrived in the region late, as well as the fact that LoL is a video game of teams made up of people from several countries, which makes it difficult for a person from a single nation to stand out .

Regarding those who want to venture into this environment , the head of Riot Games was clear and forceful: “ focus . If you’re good at League, focus on that. Be very disciplined , because those who play at a professional level take hours of training and it is not an improvised matter ”.
